Rock fishing techniques and tips

Follow these expert tips for fishing from a jet ski or from the rocks

Fishing in rock is one of the simplest modalities that exist in the world of sport fishing. In fact, many fans enjoy the thousands of places we have to be able to carry out this pastime in a quiet way at any time of the year, having good catches and performing the activity in a simple and pleasant way.

Stone fishing can be carried out from many points, both from a local pier on any afternoon and from paradisiacal destinations located in remote corners. But to be able to fish in rock successfully we have to follow some of the advice and remember some considerations that appear next; only in this way, you will be able to make your day fruitful.

Small fish

If you want to find small fish (something common when practicing rockfishing), it is best to carry out the task in the areas closest to the rocks. This is because in this way, by throwing some food (e.g. bread) or small bait, we will be able to observe closely the movements of the fish, which do not hesitate to come closer to eat.

The lighter the equipment, the better, especially if you intend to catch from further inland. You don’t need the cast to be too long, so the line should not be overloaded. Another trick would be to fish during the hours when the tide is rising.

Big fish

This type of fish is found in areas further away from the shore. So the key is in the cast we make. That’s why the material we use is so important. In fact, the gear must be larger than for small fish, especially if we fish in the final area of the dock.

We must choose a jetty that goes several meters into the sea, so that the catches are of considerable size and more varied. This area, as it is not so crowded, makes the most fearful fish go outside. We must place ourselves precisely at the tip of the breakwater.

The best technique for fishing is jigcasting. As an example, we can join a Bony jig by Hart, since it is one of the most effective for the breakwaters. We must alter short casts with long ones so that the more clever fish do not realize that we are trying to trick them.

We must also remember that, when casting the rod, the angler must be supported to avoid falling into the water; something that is obvious but that is always worth remembering, especially for those who, apart from fishing on rock, alternate different fishing methods.

It is also necessary to avoid casts that endanger people nearby, due to hitting with other rods or hooks, something quite common in crowded jetties that has even led to the prohibition of the activity from these, especially in ports.

What material to use for fishing from a jet ski?

The material to be used, as we have said in the previous section, will depend mainly on the type of catch we intend to obtain. The fishing rods must always be a minimum of 2 metres long for small fish and around 4 metres for catching larger fish, since we need to make somewhat longer casts.
In the case of fishing lines, the rods can have several to have a greater range of species to reach. If we want to catch small fish, they must have lines that go from 6 to 8 kilos. On the contrary, for more voluminous and dense species, we must go from 10 to 24 kilos, playing with different combinations to have more help at the time of taking the fish out.

Other important accessories are the buoys and the sinkers. In the case of faster waters, we should use those that have the shape of a sphere, since they are the easiest to handle. Nets can also be used, thrown in as the waves go by and instantly retrieved.

The bait used will also be absolutely conditional, so you can use small species of live shellfish, such as shrimp or crabs, in addition to the typical worm bait. Also, you can use semi-hard bread, where we will embed double or triple hooks to expand the catch.

Of course, these are only recommendations, since each fisherman must select the equipment that interests him most and with which he feels most comfortable; you can’t imagine the surprises we sometimes get with equipment that, in theory, is not so suitable!

Best species and dates for fishing from jet skies

In the summer, we have a lot of species to fish from rock. Among them, for example, we can find the bream and the sea bream. The latter is recommended to be caught especially during the day, between 10 and 21 hours. Afterwards, you can also fish for anchovy. This is great for sporting events, due to the jumps it makes at the time of capture and its fighting spirit, creating a really nice scene.

In the summer nights, the bream will be the most localized as they come closer to the areas where the wind changes or the sea beats.

The white permit is a species that starts fishing in April and can be extended until the months of November. It moves in large schools in order to catch smaller fish, so if we locate these fish, we can get more than one.

The black bass also chooses these dates to appear, but, above all, you will see it at the beginning of summer. Its great enemy is the excess of heat so if we look for it in August, we will have to do it in deeper areas.
